What is ergonomics?
The term stems from the Greek words ‘ergon’ which defines work and ‘nomos’ or natural laws in other words. So ergonomics is the technology of planning or projecting an environment, an office, or a space as well as the furniture and one’s instruments within these places, so that they fit the person’s necessities. The right layout prevents overuse or repetitive strain injuries, health problems that can develop if still left unhandled, resulting in distinct disabilities.
In order to reach the most important targets of ergonomics, one has to realize the principles which all the interactions amongst humans and machines, furniture or other factors of these systems are mostly based on. Aside from this, the function is not only to understand these laws, but most importantly to be capable to utilize them immediately after people understand that it concerns their health and prosperity.
What sciences are got together by ergonomics?
Before providing an answer, let’s have a closer look at some particular types or classes of ergonomics. First arrives physical ergonomics, that studies the anatomy, physiological and bio-mechanical features of the human body, to think of tools which could fit with these particular properties. Cognitive ergonomics is an additional branch of that science, concerned with mental processes (memory, perceptics, motor response) that influence the interactions amongst the human body and all the parts of the environment or system in which the individual lives and works. Last but not the least, organizational ergonomics aims to advance socio-technical systems, by altering their organizational structures, procedures and processes. In other words, this type of ergonomics has to do with the design of working times, the teamwork and administration of resources, quality of management and communication between employees and their managers.
As you can see, there are a number of factors which should be taken into account when creating an environment. And for this, ergonomists must have considerable experience of biomechanics and mechanical engineering, commercial design, anthropometry, kinesiology, physiology and even psychology.
Ergonomics in the workplace
That department of the science aims at presenting the comfort and safety of employees in the workplace. Ergonomics is applied to create far better furniture, like necessary workstations, as well as enhancing the quality of parts of the room which aren’t utilized properly. These objectives are accomplished by equipment and task design, but usually they only increase the quality of the environment and not the psychical comfort of the staff.
Psychical and physical ergonomics
As talked about before, that technology studies the relations between people and machines and tries to improve them. This is carried out not solely by redesigning the equipments but also,in addition, by educating people how to use the existing instruments and machinery, how to avoid work habits that can create excessive stress and how to lessen the chances of ending up with physical pain that is prompted because of unacceptable postures.
Such technology, ergonomics, looks at the work you do, it evaluates the instruments and the environment and finds the ideal match between your work and your work conditions. All the rules and knowledge that have to do with ergonomics are utilized to increase the level of your comfort and safety, reduce possible risks of getting work-related injuries and also render your office into a welcoming one.
